Last year, controversy erupted over one of Netflix's most beloved new shows. Though Hawk's character was shot in the season finale, her fate in the show was still up in there. Once the season 2 trailer dropped, it was all but confirmed that Olivia was dead. To lighten the mood, they gather at a makeshift memorial for Olivia and share their favorite memories with her. When the others tell him that he should open it, he does and reveals that it is — a Spanish-English dictionary! The friends then all laugh and recall how her Spanish was very rusty.
R29 Original Series
The Netflix coming-of-age series first debuted in March and has since been a mainstay on the streaming service's spring schedule. On My Block follows four best friends - Monse, Cesar , Ruby, and Jamal - facing the daily struggles of growing up in their inner-city Los Angeles neighborhood. Unfortunately, Cesar's gang involvement put his closest friends at risked and a rival gang member opened fire on the partygoers. Ruby and Olivia fell victim to gunshot wounds but only one was meant to survive. It was presumed that at least one of the characters would die from the event but viewers were forced to wait a year to find out the truth.
How does season 2 address Olivia's death?
On My Block returns for season 2 and Olivia's fate has finally been revealed. Is Olivia dead in On My Block season 2? Amid the celebration, Olivia and Ruby confess their feelings for one another and kiss. Excited and happy, they take to the dance floor along with Monse and Cesar.
As much humor and insanity is woven into the plot of On My Block 's first season, the Netflix series also never shies away from the darker, tragic aspects of life in the rough inner city. Now that season two is here, we finally have an answer to the fates of all the characters, though some are more painful than others. To put it bluntly, yes — Olivia is dead. Season two's first episode begins with a somber tracking shot through the neighborhood, focusing in on all the sidewalk memorials for young lives lost to violence in the area from the warring gangs, or otherwise. We don't see a memorial for Olivia until later on, but the show makes it clear that while Ruby survived, she succumbed to her gunshot wound. Though Olivia is mentioned sparingly throughout the new episodes, it's also notable how deftly On My Block 's writers have Ruby go through all the stages of grief. When you take that into consideration, it makes sense why the story doesn't have Ruby wallowing in grief about Olivia right off the bat — he's experiencing shock and denial.
