Recalling Sleepy Floyd’s historic outburst for an...
With Magic Johnson, James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar leading the way, the Lakers had won the first three games of the series by a combined 49 points. By the time the Warriors entered the fourth quarter of Game 4 down , many at Oakland Coliseum Arena expected yet another disappointment. Yet there those long-suffering fans were roaring as Floyd sank 12 of his 14 shots — almost all of which were drives past Defensive Player of the Year Michael Cooper for layups. For 12 splendid minutes, a struggling franchise gave Oakland a much-needed lift. They made more noise than you could even imagine, more than the Boston Garden, more than the Sixers.
Golden State Warriors
When the calendar turns to the month of May, the NBA playoffs are usually in full swing. However, with the season on hold for over two months due to the coronavirus pandemic , there is no playoff basketball on the current radar. Despite the league going on hiatus, the Golden State Warriors playoff hopes were already decided with 17 games remaining. With a league-worst record , the Warriors became the first team in the association to be eliminated from playoff contention. After taking out the Utah Jazz in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs, the Warriors advanced to play the Los Angeles Lakers in round two. The Warriors were down 14 points heading into the final quarter of game four with Floyd recording a modest 22 points. Facing elimination, Floyd exploded for an eye-popping scoring performance. The Georgetown product erupted in the fourth quarter to put Golden State on the comeback trail.
Floyd famously scored 29 points in the fourth quarter May 10, , in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals. He scored 51 points in all that day, one of the most memorable games in the long, vibrant history of the building now known as Oracle Arena. They were stacked, and they were very cocky. Particularly going up against Michael Cooper and Byron Scott and that crew — they were a good team defense, but I thought a lot of their players were overrated individually, defensively. As it turned out, that also was the last title until Stephen Curry and Co. We had great fan support and stuff, but now the people truly are fanatics.
