We have a lot in common. The parallels of our homo-gay Canadian twin lives are uncanny. For starters, we both have a gay twin named Sara. Years ago at a show I remember Tegan talking about how she had just moved to Vancouver, and Sara to Montreal, when lo and behold: my sister and I had just done the exact same thing. More like a twin thing where at a certain age you decide to cut the umbilical cord proverbial this time and move to opposite ends of the country in search of the autonomy that has genetically and circumstantially eluded you thus far. Or maybe you move because you just really want your own birthday cake. Gay twins are even weirder, much less common, and a lot more competitive. Is it nature? Is it nurture? Was it that prolonged exposure to all those Ani Difranco albums?
December 4, pm Updated February 26, am. A lesbian twin and her straight sister have been studied by scientists who are searching for answers about human sexuality. Researchers hoping to identify genetic and environmental factors associated with sexuality hit the jackpot when they discovered identical twins Sarah Nunn, who is attracted to men, and Rosie Albewhite, who is attracted to women. The year-old sisters were investigated by scientists as part of a study aiming to learn more about how sexuality develops in childhood. The sisters were among 55 other twins studied by researchers at the University of Essex in England. The new research will build on previous scientific studies that searched for signs of how sexuality, such as gender-atypical mannerisms of behavior, manifests before puberty. Academics have struggled to produce concrete results in the past due to difficulties determining whether reported behavior patterns were remembered accurately. But the new research using dozens of twins and photographs from their childhoods could shed light on the subject.
Scientists are studying identical twin sisters - one of whom is heterosexual, the other is homosexual - to try and gain a better understanding of human sexuality. Sarah is straight, Rosie is a lesbian and the twins are now being studied by scientists at The University of Essex. The researchers hope that the study may help them work out how, when and why human sexuality is produced. This is certainly the case with Rosie and Sarah - their childhood pictures reveal the twins as toddlers, with Sarah wearing a dress while playing with a Barbie and Rosie in a Batman outfit playing with Aladdin. The researchers concluded that from around the age of six in girls and eight in boys, sexuality differences were visible. But the work has been controversial, with some people criticising the researchers for reinforcing gender stereotypes. They can have different nutrition, different levels of hormones.
