I was watching a recent episode of 'Big Mouth' with my teenage daughter and there was a musical number set in a public bath house. There was a group of naked ladies of ALL ages singing and splashing around, all showing their boobs wrinkles and all! Towards the end of the song the two younger female characters aged about 13 were also nude, and although their lower bodies were obscured by steam, the creators had decided to prominently show their prepubescent breasts as they joined in the song with the older ladies. My daughter and I looked at each other and there was a brief moment of awkwardness before we nervously giggled and continued watching the show. I was wondering where the boundary between 'art' and 'porn' lies with respect to animated comedy on television. If a person were to be arrested for something and files were found on their computer which depicted nude children, even animated, it is my understanding that this is something that has been dealt with by the courts with respect to the definition of prohibited content.
Like the rest of the world, TV has a weird relationship with the naked body. Beyond the topless women dotted around the scenes of Game of Thrones to titillate, on-screen sex has mostly consisted of strategically-placed sheets and heaving chests to fit a pre-watershed slot. However in , the relationship between young people and nudity and sex has drastically changed; 53 per cent of 11 to 16 year olds have seen pornography online. When the only naked people teenagers have ever seen are the smooth, symmetrical figures of the average porn actor, they may come to see their own bodies as inadequate in comparison. Partner this with the not-quite-nudity seen on TV not to mention film and the sexualised advertising used to sell underwear, perfume - even yoghurt and any hope of a normal relationship with their nakedness is gone. In reaction to ever-pervasive porn culture, a number of TV shows have worked hard to flip this phenomenon on its head, using the R-rated language and imagery of pornography to show what sex - and in turn, naked bodies - are really like. Nudity in the show is prolific. Even now, male genitalia is very rarely seen on screen erect penises are banned from commercial film , but the truth is that men have body issues tied up in pornography, too. How could they not?
